From prosthodontic planning to implant-supported rehabilitation

The Master in Advanced Implant Prosthodontic Treatments is a one-year, 60 ECTS university program designed for dentists who want to expand their prosthodontic knowledge into the field of implant dentistry, digital workflows and complex implant-supported rehabilitation.

The program is particularly suited to clinicians who have already completed advanced training in prosthodontics at the University of Siena under the guidance of Prof Ferrari – including graduates of a two-year Prosthodontics Master – and want to complete their learning pathway by integrating implant surgery, prosthetically driven implant placement and implant-supported prosthetic treatments into their clinical practice.

Rather than considering implant placement as an isolated surgical procedure, the Master approaches implant dentistry from a restorative and prosthodontic perspective: diagnosis, treatment planning and the desired final restoration guide the entire clinical workflow.

A comprehensive approach to implant prosthodontics

The program follows the complete decision-making process behind implant-supported treatments, starting from the biological and anatomical foundations of implant dentistry and progressing towards increasingly complex clinical situations.

Students will explore the anatomy of the jaws, bone biology and the physiology of osseointegration, providing the scientific basis necessary to understand implant treatment and its biological limitations.

The surgical component introduces the fundamental principles of implant placement, including surgical procedures, implant positioning and the different timing protocols for implant placement.

Particular emphasis is placed on Prosthodontically Guided Implantology: implants should be planned and positioned according to the final prosthetic outcome rather than considering surgery and restoration as separate phases of treatment.

Diagnosis, digital planning and clinical decision-making

A central part of the Master is dedicated to diagnosis and treatment planning.

Students will learn how to evaluate implant cases from both a biological and prosthetic perspective and how to translate the treatment plan into a predictable clinical workflow.

Digital technologies will be integrated throughout the program, including the use of SmileCloud and dedicated implant-planning software to support diagnosis, communication, prosthetic design and implant positioning.

Both digital and conventional workflows will be discussed, allowing participants to understand their respective indications, advantages and limitations rather than relying on a single clinical approach.

The program will progressively move from straightforward cases to complex rehabilitations, including:

  • single implant-supported crowns;
  • partially edentulous cases;
  • multiple implant-supported restorations;
  • complex treatment planning;
  • full-arch implant-supported rehabilitations;
  • prosthetically guided implant placement;
  • digital implant planning and guided workflows;
  • navigated implantology.

From planning to hands-on practice

The practical component of the Master is designed to transform treatment-planning concepts into clinical skills.

Participants will work on phantom models to perform implant placement exercises, developing familiarity with implant positioning and surgical sequences in a controlled environment.

A significant part of the hands-on training will also focus on diagnosis and treatment planning using dedicated software for Prosthodontically Guided Implantology.

Students will work through cases of increasing complexity, learning how to combine anatomical information, digital data and prosthetic objectives to determine the optimal implant position and rehabilitation strategy.

The goal is not simply to learn how to place an implant, but to understand where, when and why an implant should be placed according to the final prosthetic treatment.

An advanced step after prosthodontic training

Implant dentistry is increasingly inseparable from prosthodontics, digital dentistry and interdisciplinary treatment planning.

For clinicians who already have a solid prosthodontic background, this Master represents a natural next step: from restoring teeth to planning and managing implant-supported rehabilitations.

At the end of the program, participants will have developed a structured approach to implant cases – from biological and anatomical assessment to digital planning, implant positioning and the design of the final prosthetic rehabilitation.
